The traditional method for laying natural edged riven York stone flags is in a random rectangular format. Stone is selected for its complementary colour and texture before laying to ensure an even spread. The style when laid is with the lines of each slab broken up at least every three slabs or every 2 m2, no adjoining lines should be visible from a focal point i.e. a window frame, cross joints where four corners meet would generally be deemed unsightly and detrimental to the traditional pattern. The gaps can vary slightly dependant on the style of property but 15mm - 25mm would be the maximum tolerance.
